Hiking Lighter After 50

In short: After 50 the body is less forgiving of a pack that's too heavy — not for lack of fitness, but because joints and recovery become more sensitive. The good news: most of the weight isn't saved on yourself but in your pack, and nearly all of it on the "Big Three" — backpack, sleep system, tent.

Why every kilo weighs more later on

Over the years you notice weight not just in the evening, but the next morning. Knees and back protest against overloading sooner, and recovery between stages takes longer. That's no reason to scale back — but it is a reason to look honestly at the ballast. I once carried 18 kilos in Sarek and learned along the way that half of it was fear, not necessity.

Where the weight really sits

Not in the many small things, but in three big ones:

The rest — clothing, electronics, odds and ends — adds up to little. Optimising there while the Big Three stay heavy means saving at the wrong end.

Where I would NOT save

The biggest lever costs nothing

Don't buy — leave it at home. The heaviest thing in the pack is almost always what you bring "just in case" and never use. And with food, the lever isn't going without, but energy density — more on that in How much does trail food weigh.

Compare honestly instead of guessing

I built outdoor.gift because I wanted to compare my base weight between trips without scraps of paper and spreadsheets. Enter your gear with real weights, see what a lighter item actually gains you, and what you can safely leave at home. Plan in the app · Understanding base weight

Frequently asked questions

How heavy should my pack be after 50? There's no fixed limit, but a base weight (without food and water) under 9 kg is a good, realistic target and clearly spares your joints and your recovery.

Where do I save the most weight? On the "Big Three": backpack, sleep system, tent. That's where the lion's share sits. Small items barely matter individually.

Where should I not save? On the sleeping mat, shoes and poles. Sleep, fit and relieved knees are worth more than a few grams saved.
